Where do the filter lists come from?

The shield uses public, community-maintained filter lists: EasyList, EasyPrivacy, uBlock Origin's filters (including its privacy, unbreak and quick-fix lists) and Peter Lowe's list. They are downloaded from their maintainers' servers only after you agree on first launch, and checked about once a week while the app is open. You can turn lists on or off, add a regional list, or update them now in Settings › Ad blocking. Credits and licenses are in Settings › About OrbitX › Credits and licenses.

A website doesn't work properly. What can I do?

Sometimes blocking ads or trackers breaks part of a site, or the site refuses to work with an ad blocker. You can turn the shield off for that one site:

  1. Open the site.
  2. Tap the OrbitX logo at the right end of the address bar.
  3. Turn off the shield for this site. The page reloads without blocking.

The shield stays on for every other site. You can see and remove these exceptions in Settings › Ad blocking.

How does the password vault work?

When you log in to a site, OrbitX can offer to save the password. Saved passwords are encrypted on your iPhone with a key kept in the iOS Keychain, and are unlocked with Face ID, Touch ID or your device passcode. When you tap a login field on the same site, a bar appears to fill your username and password. Passwords never leave your iPhone unless you export a backup yourself; that backup is encrypted with a password you choose. Private tabs never save or fill passwords.

What does a private tab keep?

Nothing after it is closed: no history, no passwords, no saved tabs. Cookies and site data live only in memory and are discarded when the last private tab closes.

Why is "Translate" asking for confirmation?

Translating sends the address of the page to Google Translate, which then loads the page. OrbitX asks once before doing this; you can withdraw the confirmation in Settings › Privacy and security.

Can I make OrbitX my default browser?

Not yet on iPhone. Apple requires a special permission for default browsers, which OrbitX does not have at the moment.

Does OrbitX collect my data?

No. There is no account, no analytics and no advertising. See the Privacy Policy – iOS for the full list of network requests the app makes.
