How does the shield work?

The shield blocks ads and trackers using public, community-maintained filter lists: EasyList, EasyPrivacy, uBlock Origin's filters (including its privacy, unbreak and quick-fix lists) and Peter Lowe's list. They are downloaded from their maintainers' servers only after you agree on first launch, and checked about once a week while the app is open. You can turn lists on or off, add a regional list, or update them now in Settings › Ad blocking. Credits and licenses are in Settings › About OrbitX › Credits and licenses.

A website doesn't work properly. What can I do?

Sometimes blocking ads or trackers breaks part of a site, or the site refuses to work with an ad blocker. You can turn the shield off for that one site:

  1. Open the site.
  2. Click the shield icon in the address bar.
  3. Turn off the shield for this site. The page reloads without blocking.

The shield stays on for every other site. You can see and remove these exceptions in Settings › Ad blocking.

How do I import bookmarks from another browser?

OrbitX can import bookmarks from Chrome, Edge, Brave or Firefox. Choose Import from another browser in the settings and pick the browser's bookmarks file in the dialog that opens. OrbitX only reads the file you select.

What does a private tab keep?

Nothing after it is closed: no history, no passwords, no saved tabs. Cookies and site data live only in memory and are discarded when you close all private tabs or quit the app.

How do I back up my passwords?

Open Backup in the settings, choose Include saved passwords and Export backup. The file contains your bookmarks, settings and site permissions and is encrypted with a passphrase you choose. Nothing is uploaded; you decide where to save the file. To restore it, choose Import backup on any Mac with OrbitX. Saved passwords themselves are protected by your Keychain and unlocked with Touch ID or your Mac password.

How do I delete my data?

Use Settings › Privacy and security › Clear browsing data, or delete single entries in History, Bookmarks, Downloads and the password vault. To remove everything OrbitX has stored, quit the app, move it to the Trash and delete the folder ~/Library/Containers/com.orbitx.browsermac.

Why is "Translate" asking for confirmation?

Translating sends the address of the page to Google Translate, which then loads the page. OrbitX asks once before doing this; you can withdraw the confirmation in Settings › Privacy and security.

Does OrbitX collect my data?

No. There is no account, no analytics and no advertising. See the Privacy Policy – Mac for the full list of network requests the app makes.
